The Wingless Bird (TWB) & Our Dedication to the Animal Welfare Act 2006
At TWB, our commitment to the welfare of every little lion we care for is firmly aligned with the UK's Animal Welfare Act 2006. Built on the "Five Freedoms", this legislation establishes the fundamental rights every animal should have. TWB integrates these values into all we do, ensuring compassionate & comprehensive care that goes beyond the basics to support each cat's health, comfort & emotional wellbeing.
Living the Five Freedoms
The Five Freedoms guide our approach to care, ensuring each little lion in our hands receives the respect & attention they deserve.
1. Freedom from Hunger & Thirst
TWB ensures every little lion's dietary needs are met, working closely with clients to provide balanced meals & fresh water, our cat sitters, affectionately known as "Birds", encourage eating & consult with the owner about potential vet care if needed.
2. Freedom from Discomfort
Our in-home service model keeps little lions in their comfort zone, avoiding the stress of unfamiliar surroundings. If a cat shows signs of discomfort, such as hiding or unusual behaviour, our cat sitters aka. "Birds" adjust their care approach & communicate with the owner about any ongoing concerns.
3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease
TWB Birds are trained in Feline First Aid & Fear-Free certified in handling, ensuring they can address any signs of illness or injury with urgency. If a cat appears unwell, we alert the owner immediately & assist with a vet visit if needed. Through regular wellness checks, we proactively monitor for early signs of discomfort, helping to prevent issues escalating.
4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour
Through tailored enrichment, TWB gives each little lion a safe outlet for natural behaviours, from play to exploration. If a sat seems under-stimulated or exhibits excessive scratching or vocalising, our Birds engage them in activities that promote natural feline instincts, sharing updates & suggestions with the owner.
5. Freedom from Fear & Distress
Our Birds approach every interaction with respect, especially for timid or feral cats, creating a calm & secure environment. If a cat seems overly fearful, we adjust our approach to reduce stress & discuss strategies with the owner to maintain a sense of peace & security.
